Sant' Antioco stands on the remains of Sulki, one of the oldest cities in the western Mediterranean. Built in 770 BC by the Phoenicians, Sulki became one of the most prosperous Sardinian cities during the Roman rule.

The island has important archaeological evidence from the Nuragic and pre-Nuragic periods such as the Menhirs the Giants' Tombs and the Tophet, the Phoenician sanctuary, which make Sant'Antioco one of the most visited cultural destinations in Sardinia.
